Trout Opener 2014

After a spring storm I was reluctant to go out for the trout opener. The weather went from 80 degrees to 60 degrees within a day and I had mix feelings about how the fishing would be. But seeing as I had an open schedule, I decide to get out there on one of my favorite streams. This was my first time fishing around snow and I was thrilled to see how beautiful everything was.

Buying Cheap Flies Online

Fill Up The Fly Box

Before I started tying my own flies I would often go to different websites to find cheap flies that I could fish with. I just wanted to pick up as may flies as I could so I could get out on the water and catch some fish.

There were endless amounts of websites online that sold flies for very cheap  but how quality was their product? Was the pattern the in the right proportion?  Was the pattern tied with the right materials? What was the quality of the hook? How durable was the fly? These were some of the dilemmas that I faced when buying flies online for less than a dollar a fly versus buying them at the local fly shop for two dollars a fly.

Here is some advice on how to start collection flies that will catch you fish while being cost-effective:

Exploring the Feather River

Wild Feather River Beautiful Coloration

My long weekend has come to an end and my last adventure was exploring the Feather River Low Flow at White Gate. The road to White Gate wasn't as bad as it looked. My old Camry did pretty well despite some ups and downs of the road. I had originally planned to go to Paradise Lake but I opted out because it was suppose to be windy. I'm glad I didn't go.

Beautiful Spring

First Crappie of 2014
Spring is in full fling as my allergies have been killing me this last week. Regardless, I am still out doing what I love to do; fly fishing. Its been really windy and warm which basically means I feel miserable which therefore means that I am not really enjoying being out as much as I would like to. I'm still chasing carp at Horseshoe Lake and managed to hook a few but no landing as of recently. I'm currently on sort of a mini vacation at home and fished Ellis Lake and the Yuba river.

Chasing Carp in the Spring

Ellis Lake Carp

There is nothing better than chasing big fish that you can see. Carp are my favorite fish to catch because you are playing their game not your own. They eat when they want to and they do nothing when they want to; It's often a hit and miss. I've hooked a few and landed less than I would like but it's all fantastic fly fishing.

Wind Is Not My Friend

First float tube fish

The rain and cold is finally gone and the spring warming has begun. Last week was a pain. It was windy, rainy, stormy, snowy, and all of the above. Its going to be sunny and warm for the next few weeks, hopefully that means the warm-water fish will turn on and local fishing will get better. The sun and wind has brought a lot of activity with people everywhere outdoors. The wind is not my friend and has been frustrating to fish with. I will conquer this fear and catch fish but its always more comfortable to fish without the wind blowing my hats off.

April Is My Spring Fishing Peak

Bigger Feather River Chome

I'm hoping to start posting more often to keep track of my awesome adventures. This weekend was a three-day weekend for CSU Chico and I found some time here and there to wet the line and the results were fantastic.
I fished Ellis Lake and the Feather and had some great takes.
