Officially In Spring Mode

That Lateral Line!

Its officially spring but it feels almost like summer. The weather is amazing with slight breezes and 80 degree air temps. Although we really need the rain, the time to really gather it is over now and we get what we get. Nevertheless the weather is beautiful and so is the fishing. Who's arm is sore from catching fish? This guy.

The Last Day of Spring Break

The Last Day of Spring Break: Before The Front

Greedy Lil Green Sunfish

So it had finally came to an end. I ended my Spring Break fishing Ellis Lake. With winds up to 15mph and with a high of 70 degrees it was going to be a tough one. The lake was starting to turn over with warm water temps. I was using my 3wt this time and started with the north lake first as usual. With no luck after covering a lot of water I switch the south lake.

Spring Break: Day 4

Anglers Cove
Day 4: Not A Crappie Day
At the last minute I decided I wanted to go chase some crappie out on Black Butte Reservoir. The last time I was out there it was about two years ago. Taking this trip got me into some trouble but live and learn.

Spring Break: Day 3

Looks Almost Like a Native?

Day 3: On The Feather The Swing Is The Thing
I woke up this morning at 5am to get to the Feather at around 6:15am.  The plan today was going to be swinging flies all day. The day began on the high flow section and although I saw several rises I did not get anything to take. The fish that were rising were in slower water and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they weren't steelhead, most likely hardhead or pike minnow. After wading down a bit and not getting anything I drove further upstream and fished several riffles and runs that I've never fished before.

Spring Break: Day 1 and Day 2

The first two days of spring break have been fantastic. The warm-water fish are definitely awake and hungry.

Day 1: Popper Power
The first day of spring break was spent fishing the Goldfields and the fishing was phenomenal. The Yuba River was sitting at a very low 590 CFS and was gin clear. This usually means the river fishing is tough as nails and extremely technical. I didn't want to devote the entire day to the river so I spent most of my time hiking around looking for new ponds.

Mirror Mirror

John Montana Pose

There aren't too many options in Chico when it comes to fishing during the off-season. The Sacramento River is the closest moving body of water that is open until the trout opener in April. In order to compensate for the lack of fishable moving water, I've discovered a few lakes and ponds around Chico that are difficult to fish but produce quality catches.

It's Spring Break!

Nice Average Horseshoe Lake Bass

One of the perks of working in education is that you get days off. It is officially spring break and the fishing has just gotten better. I have a few places planned to fish so I will be updating as I go. These places are the Yuba Goldfields, Yuba River, Ellis Lake, Horseshoe Lake, and possibly Butte Creek. The fishing will be great with warm sunny days like the ones we've been seeing for the past few weeks. I'm looking forward to it but until then I've been fishing the Feather River for steelhead and Horseshoe Lake for bass and catfish.

Turbid Waters and Bedding Bass

This weekend I caught some fish. Although they didn't take me into my backing the real task was to figure out what worked and didn't work.

Another Personal Best

Lucky Horseshoe Trophy

Horseshoe Lake
When I woke up this morning I did not expect I'd be fishing today let alone catch a new personal best. What an awesome surprise.
My girlfriend needed me to drop her off at the hair saloon at around 11am so I had about an hour to go out and wet my line before I had to go back and pick her up. I thought maybe I'd give Horseshoe Lake a shot. It should be warm enough today and maybe I could entice something to bite. I picked up a few flies that I had tied for the lake and set off.
